Huka Falls body boarder has no regrets

Posted at 10:13am Wednesday 28 Feb, 2018 | By Sam Gardner

A Mount Maunganui man who body boarded down Huka Falls recently has described the act as epic, but not one he’d try again.

In a video posted online which has now gone viral, Timothy Beresford is seen leaping into the rapids donning his body board, a wetsuit, dive flippers and a helmet fit with a camera.

“It was on the bucket list so I thought I’d give it a go. I’d planned it for a couple of months and done training. Obviously it was bit hard to know what I was in for but I had a fair idea.

“It was hectic, it was wild and a gnarly ride. Definitely a good experience but not one I’d do again.

“When I went over the falls, you sort of expect you’ll hit a flat surface. It wasn’t really like that, the force kept going even when you get to water level. The force keeps pushing you under about the same amount as the height of the falls were.

“I was held under for quite a while so I started to wonder when I was going to come up.”

His inspiration comes from another stuntman who performed a similar act last year. He isn’t phased by criticism.

“People have their own opinions and at the end of the day that’s fine, I don’t mind what people think, I did it for myself not anyone else.

“I know what I’m doing and I understand some people might think it’s reckless but anything can be dangerous. You might as well die doing something you like if that’s a possibility.”

Not to mention the cost...

not just of the rescue...but ongoing cost of serious injury paid for by ACC ( taxpayers). Time he grew up and showed the appropriate maturity for his age.

You may not have any regrets and not afraid of dying but you never gave any thoughts to those who have family and putting themselves in danger having to go to rescue you.I hope the police are on your tail.
